About

The conference

ATEM 2023 is unique in the tertiary education industry:

  • embracing the full range of professional disciplines that contribute to operating universities, polytechnics and wānanga, TAFEs, VET and private providers, agencies and other organisations across the tertiary education sector
  • celebrating excellence in the work of individuals and teams, from early-career to expert, working in the academic, professional and ‘third space’ domains
  • a creative, curated program that offers many different ways for you to interact, learn and make connections
  • a conference for current and aspiring sector leaders, which focuses on the future of the sector and addresses key issues and opportunities

Folded into three intensive days, ATEM 2023 comprises keynote speakers, panel discussions, interviews, workshops, meetings of special interest groups, and a full day (equivalent) of peer-led concurrent sessions.

This conference offers an immersive networking and content-led environment. There is no ‘exhibitor hall’ – as in the real world, we treat sponsors and vendors as valued business partners, fully integrated into the conference.

On the third and final day, a generous chunk of time is set aside for delegate-led sessions on topics that arise during the first two days. Site visits and tours round out this innovative conference program, showcasing the world-class universities located in the heart of Melbourne.

Sustainability

ATEM is committed to the protection of the planet. In 2023 we are working towards reducing the environmental impact of our annual conference in the following ways:

  • Minimising conference give-aways
  • Reducing waste wherever possible
  • Using tap water instead of bottled water
  • Using fair-trade coffee and ensuring coffee cups are reusable
  • Using reusable crockery
  • Working with the venue to ensure that we minimise waste, maximise recycling and reduce waste to landfill
  • Using name tags and lanyards that can be reused or recycled
  • Minimising the environmental impact of our food choices by making more sustainable food options available including plant-based, seasonal and locally-sourced where possible
  • Donating leftover food to local food charity organisations
  • Encouraging participants to use public transport, bicycles or rideshare services instead of private vehicles

Additionally, we are:

  • Asking sponsors to consider and reduce the environmental impacts of their conference marketing materials
  • Working with the conference organisers to ensure that communication and marketing materials for the conference are sustainable and messaging supports the TEMC commitment to sustainability
  • Asking attendees to the conference to consider offsetting carbon emissions for travel and accommodation if the option is available within their institutions
